Art, Light, Music and Technology. Any one of these four key elements of Illuminate Adelaide are exciting to young children, but all of them together? This is a real sensory experience that babies, toddlers, children and adults can all enjoy on a variety of levels this winter.
Situated at locations throughout the city, including sites such as Adelaide Zoo, this stunning winter experience has a large number of free events. We’ve rounded up the absolute highlights for your little ones, and you, to marvel at and enjoy:
Light Cycles
You may have already visited Adelaide Botanic Garden on a day out with your children – but be prepared to see it transformed by the amazing multimedia studio Moment Factory.
Children will love the installations and light experiences, which highlight nature’s secret rhythms through light and sound. Video and special effects will be in full flow to engage imaginations and create a sense of wonder.
Sessions start from 6.15pm but it’s totally worth the late night for the little ones. Make sure you book tickets in advance.
Van Gogh Alive
Located in the specially designed and constructed 20,000 sq foot immersive gallery at The Grand Pavilion, this show really has to be seen to be believed.
Multi sensory and fascinating to children and adults alike, this is a tribute to one of the most famous artists ever. Audio visual technology is cleverly used to transport viewers into some of the most famous masterpieces in the Western art world. There are giant screens, beautiful classical music and enough visual imagery to captivate even the most restless youngsters.
The Van Gogh Alive sensation comes to Illuminate Adelaide having toured more than 60 cities around the world.
You can book tickets here.
Sky Castle
This is a great option if you have a stroller or multiple little ones to coordinate as it’s situated at the heart of Rundle Mall from 8am (perfect if you’re up and about early!) with easy wheelchair access.
Designed by Melbourne studio ENESS, this is an interactive dreamscape which takes you ‘inside’ the rainbow. Children will love watching the colours change as they walk (or run!) under inflatable archways – with xylophone melodies as a musical backdrop.
Sky Castle has a heart warming underlying effort which is to gently coax people back to public spaces again after the isolation of the past year and to emphasise the importance of community and togetherness.
Sky Castle is a free attraction during the Illuminate Adelaide Festival, you can find out more information here.
