Sun Safe Policy Statement:
Stepping Stone (SA) Childcare & Early Development Centres Pty. Ltd. aims to provide a safe environment which children can play and explore their outside world, whilst safeguarding them from the harmful effects of exposure to the sun and ultraviolet radiation.

Sun Safe

  • Our Sun Safe Policy applies for 52 weeks of the year whenever the UV radiation levels are 3 and above. When the UV radiation level is below 3, sun protection is not needed for some sun exposure for Vitamin D.
  • Team members are to ensure water is readily accessible for all children when outside to prevent dehydration.
  • Stepping Stone (SA) Childcare and Early Development Centres Pty. Ltd. will supply age appropriate sunscreen for children.
  • Stepping Stone (SA) Childcare and Early Development Centres Pty. Ltd. will provide  sun safe hats for all children and Team members when outside.
  • The preferred styles of hats for the children are legionnaire’s hats.  For the educators a wide brimmed hat will be supplied to the Centre for use by the educators. If educators require their ‘own’ sun safe hat they are to purchase the Stepping Stone (SA) hat through Head Office. Parents are to be informed that it is expected that children wear legionnaire hat styles.
  • The Centre will launder the hats on a regular basis and store the hats appropriately when not in use.
  • The Centre is to provide and display sun care literature from the Cancer Council or other relevant and reputable resources.
  • Sun protection and Vitamin D are incorporated into the learning framework and planned experiences.
  • Parents are expected to abide by the Sun Safe Policy and the Clothing Policy during the Centres operational hours when their child/ren are in attendance.
  • Sun care information will be available to all families through centre activities and children’s programmed experiences. Information will also be made available in Centre Newsletters.
  • Parents, students, volunteers and visitors attending the Centre supporting an outdoor programmed event will be required to wear a sun smart hat and sunscreen. The hat must be wide brimmed or legionnaire style.
  • Each Centre will have a shortcut icon on their desktop for the Centre Director (or nominated staff member) to easily access the UV rating and the projected temperature forecast for the day. Web address is http://www.bom.gov.au
  • Each Centre will have the UV rating displayed to ensure all Team members and parents are informed of the UV rating on a daily basis.

Allergies

  • In the event a child is allergic to the supplied sunscreen the parent/ guardian is to supply a suitable alternative which is SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum and water resistant. Sunscreen bottle is to be labelled with the child’s name and date provided.

Sun exposure and vitamin D

  • Current information indicates that at certain times of the year when UV radiation is below 3 and during the months of May – July, it is safe for the general population to leave hats and sunscreen off to ensure vitamin D levels are maintained.
