What is The Child Care Subsidy (CSS)?

The Child Care Subsidy is designed to help families cover the costs of their child care, through approved facilities.

Approved childcare facilities

The Government pays the determined amount directly to your chosen child care provider, to reduce the fees that your family is required to pay.

The hourly rate cap that will be subsidised is determined on a case by case basis, and is decided by looking at a few main points: the type of child care you require, the child’s age, and the household income.

Not all early education and care facilities are approved for the Child Care subsidy. Approved facilities include:

  • Centre Based Day Care, including long day care and occasional care
  • Family Day Care
  • Outside School Hours Care, including before, after and vacation care
  • In Home Care

How can it help your family?

The Child Care Subsidy will help to relieve the financial pressure that education can place on your family, as long as your situation is eligible.

To establish eligibility, the following factors will be taken into consideration:

  • Your family’s income
  • The hourly rate cap that applied to your chosen approved child care
  • Your child’s age
  • The hours of activity that you and your partner do (e.g. work hours)

Subsidy is not determined per family, but per child — this means that if you’ve got multiple children, you’re able to apply for each individual child.

There are some guidelines available online to calculate how much subsidised child care you can access per fortnight per child, including the calculator available here,

How do you apply for the CSS?

The Services Australia website provides answers to all the questions you might have, including a step-by-step guide for how to make your suitable claim. You can access the application page here.

An overview of the process is as follows:

  • Get ready to make your claim — the easiest way is to apply online. To do this, you’ll need a myGov account that is linked to Centrelink. If online application isn’t an option, then you can call the Families Line on 135 150.
  • Get your documents ready — the documentation is all available online at the above link.
  • Make your claim — sign into myGov and head to Centrelink. Select Payment and Claims in the menu, then follow the Claims prompt to state your claim. Choose Families, and then get started!
  • Submit your claim — once all questions have been answered, submit your claim.

While the online services do provide information every step of the way, our team at Stepping Stone is also available to help you. Please get in touch for more information.

How do you know if you're eligible?

When applying for the Child Care Subsidy, there are a few boxes that you and your family must tick…

  • Care for a child 13 or younger who’s not attending secondary school (unless an exemption applies)
  • Use an approved child care service — like Stepping Stone (SA)!
  • Be responsible for paying the child care fees
  • Meet residency requirements
  • Meet immunisation requirements

You may also be eligible if you or your partner meet all of the following:

  • Care for your child at least 2 nights per fortnight, or have 14% care
  • Are liable for fees for care provided at an approved child care service
  • Meet the residency rules

In some situations, the government is also able to provide an additional Child Care Subsidy. These situations apply if you’re:

  • A grandparent
  • Transitioning to work
  • Experiencing temporary financial hardship
