Success at Stepping Stone Happy Valley in growing healthy snacks...

Success at Stepping Stone Happy Valley in growing healthy snacks can be attributed to our “no dig garden”.

Educators and children enthusiastically discussed the implementation of the steps required. Children assisted with the layers of Lucerne and Hay, which results in a raised garden bed, then planted the seedlings themselves, creating a sense of ownership and engagement.

To protect our “No dig garden” a scarecrow stands “on guard” his facial expression modelled by the children, displays a cranky look to show he takes his duty very seriously.

Children have their own tools to use in the garden, rakes, spades, watering cans, they are supported by educators in their use, which lays down many opportunities for intentional teachings.

Healthy snacks are enjoyed daily by the children. Our recipes are simple yet varied encouraging discovery of different tastes and textures. We continuously add new and interesting menu items to increase the quality of food prepared in childcare.

Our ongoing commitment to diversifying our outdoor area, will soon include a series of interconnected gardens including a tepee garden, fruit trees, herb garden and an indigenous garden, growing plants native to Happy Valley in which children can explore, investigate and develop a love for nature and gardening.
